After reading the title of this article – you may think there is a secret sauce I have discovered to happiness. The secret I want to share with you is – there isn’t a secret sauce! In fact, as I have done research and implemented these 5 steps into my own daily living – I have been amazed that keeping things simple, results in increasing happiness!
There are 5 habits, I invite you to try. They have been tested and tried and I can assure you, IF YOU – commit yourself to these 5 things daily, you will be happier.
Here is the caveat. It isn’t a magic pill, and it can’t be done by anyone else. It takes YOU and your efforts.
Let’s get started:
1. Keep a Gratitude Journal:
The daily practice of being grateful is something that raises your mood, and your energy instantly. Its proven that the emotion of gratitude increases the serotonin in the brain and your mood is lifted. Who knew? Some people have asked me – well can I just say them or think them? Absolutely – that is totally up to you – but if you want to go to that deeper level, you will gift yourself time to sit each day – whether in the morning or before you go to sleep at night – to write 5 things you are grateful for. It doesn’t have to be a long drawn out process. It can simply be – writing a sentence – what are you grateful for?
Do one thing for you daily that helps take care of you. I know what you are thinking – how can I do this in my busy life. I am right there along with you. But I assure you that when I take the time to listen to what my body needs – my level of happiness increases. These things don’t have to be experiences. Some examples of this could include – taking a hot bath, going for a walk, taking a nap, reading a book for 20 min that you have been putting off. For me recently the thing that has helped me feel good is going to the batting cages, just to physically get out and do something I enjoy. Make sure what you are doing is validating who you are. If your going out to play in some competitive event – and it makes you feel energized and uplifted, then by all means do it. But if you feel like the event is depleting you in anyway – re-evaluate and regroup. For some going shopping – and just looking not even buying anything is energizing – for me – that causes me so much stress. Plan out your self-care – everything will try to steal this precious time away from you. Don’t Let it!
3. Brain Dump:
Like you, I feel like there is so many things to do and little time to get them all done. MY grandmother always said – “the years continue to fly by faster and faster.” Often, I find myself surprised by the fact that another month has gone by – and its almost humorous – like I didn’t know it happened. One activity I do weekly and sometimes daily is I sit down and make a list of all the things that are floating around in my mind – go return that product, ensure the furnace filter is replaced, mow the lawn, wash the kid’s gym cloths for Monday, birthday gift for a friend, check in on so and so after the death of their loved one, dinners for the week, etc. I get it – so much in our brains. This requires a lot of energy and time if we continue just thinking about them. I sit down with a blank piece of paper and I dump all the ideas for writing, activities, events, check ins and requirements on this paper. Read my Time Management post about how to organize your days and weeks to be the most productive.
4. Connection: Connect daily with your source, and one human each day!
a. To Source and your inner self:
Connected daily with your higher power, source, God or inner self to be clear on what it is you are to do that day. Some people do this by going for a quiet walk – others feel meditation and pray serves them. Taking these moments and connecting with our souls and our source can increase happiness and clarity in our lives.
b. Connect with someone face to face (positive people 😊)
Our ability to connect is being diminished by the digital world. How we are using the social media world can bring so much joy or so much disconnect. If we are looking to replace face to face interactions with social media, there is an element of connection that cannot happen. Make sure you call someone or talk with someone face to face each day to ensure you fell connected energetically with real life people. There have been times that I have met someone I have been FB friends with for a long time. There is so much more connection when we take the time and sit down with people and connect!
5. Move: action creates action
Do something in the direction of what you want in life. It can be something small – go for a walk. Do some writing, take pictures of things that make you happy. Just do something! I promise you if you MOVE, energetically great things will come into your world because you have proved to the universe you are willing to do something. Waiting for the dream bus, or the money ship, is not going to get you anywhere – do your part and watch the world come to life.
You may be thinking to yourself – how can this increase my happiness?
I assure you – doing these five thing, will create a higher frequency in your life and create a level of happiness that you didn’t know before!
1. Being Grateful and keeping a gratitude journal
2. Self-care – Do one thing daily for you
3. Plan out your day – Brain Dump
4. Connected to Self and Others
5. Move – Energy creates energy!
Let me know your thoughts 😊 and make it a wonderful day ahead!
